Your Secret Challenge Awaits

One of the people that really taught me what it meant to follow Jesus was a youth intern at my church named Matt Mattoon.

Before we get into the story though I need to say… I love that my name kinda rhymes… “Matt Knapp” - but no way does it compare to “Matt Mattoon.” His name is on another level. That dude has his name in his first AND last name. I really hope his full name is like Matthew Matthius Mattoon.

Anyway.

One day, I was sitting at home doing absolutely nothing and he called me to see if I wanted to go do sneaky stuff. Why yes Mr. Matt Mattoon, yes I would.

So he picked me and some of my friends up and he drove us back to the church kitchen so we could…

Bake cookies.

Yep. We baked cookies. That wasn’t the sneaky part though. We baked cookies then plated them, turned them into gifts, and then sneakily dropped them off at people’s houses and work places. The goal was to not be seen and just make cookies randomly appear to brighten someones day.

Real quick… do I condone youth leaders nowadays texting teenagers and ask them to do sneaky stuff? No. Absolutely not! But it was the ‘90s, and one day I bet there will be a handful of documentaries on ‘90s youth groups.

That one day of what Matt Mattoon called being “Secret Servants” changed the way I thought about my relationships and life in general. The best way to find purpose, to find joy, and to understand Jesus is to serve other people… and to do it without seeking recognition.

So this week that is my challenge. Go be a secret servant to someone else. Do something that blesses someone's day and do it in a way where you get no credit for it. After all, we are followers of Jesus and even he didn’t come to be served… but to serve.
